Bell Tower Restoration
Location: Wayne, PA
Client: Wayne Presbyterian Church
Design Professional: N/A
This project involved the comprehensive restoration of the bell tower at Wayne Presbyterian Church. Our team addressed structural deterioration, waterproofing failures, and aesthetic degradation while preserving the architectural integrity of the structure.
Scope of work:
- Installed fixed scaffolding on all four sides of the tower, including access to the spires. Temporary protections were placed over roofing and entrances to ensure safety and uninterrupted church access. Debris netting enclosed the scaffolding for containment.
- Removed deteriorated waterproofing and sealants from limestone coping stones. Applied new elastomeric waterproofing coating without altering the tower’s exterior appearance.
- Repointed 100% of mortar joints at the four corner spires using a raised ribbon profile to match existing masonry.
- Performed localized repointing of deteriorated mortar joints on the tower exterior, focusing on areas with reported water infiltration.
- Replaced bird-proofing mesh inside the four tower louvers with stainless-steel mesh and hardware. Removed and replaced perimeter sealants, then scraped, primed, and painted the louvers with exterior-grade paint.
- Installed a certified lightning protection system with rods at each spire, grounded per code by a licensed installer. A compliance certificate and warranty were provided.
- Power-washed the entire tower exterior, with detailed cleaning of heavily soiled limestone areas to match previously cleaned sections of the church.
- Accessed the roof and repaired deteriorated sheet metal, and coated to match existing finishes.
